After having previously formed close economic ties, first with Belgium alone, then with Belgium and the Netherlands in the Benelux framework which is still today a model laboratory for integrated cooperation between sovereign countries, the Grand Duchy became a founder member of the European Community. Luxembourg City is one of the EU’s capitals, hosting among others the European Parliament, the Secretariat of the European Commission, the Court of Justice of the European Union, the European Court of Auditors as well as the European Investment Bank.
In Europe, Luxembourg has been able to enjoy a political importance that is inversely proportional to its small size. The skills of its leaders and the absence of implication of national interests in major international conflicts have made the Grand Duchy an appreciated mediator between its larger EU partners. The Grand Duchy is also a member of the United Nations Organization, the Council of Europe, the Northern Atlantic Treaty Organization, the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe, the Western European Union and the World Trade Organization.
